headed eastbound. the car caught fire about 3- quarters of the way through. >> reporter:kron4's mike pelton talked to a man who was in the tunnel when it happened. and recorded it all. >> reporter:i was telling people we need to start moving.i was concerned >> reporter:captured all on his cell phone, kevin watkins recounts the nerve- racking moments, escaping a dimly-lit, smoke-filled caldecott tunnel - caused by a car fire (cheers & applause) >>you could smell something burning tie i then grabbed myself and started following the crowd out >> reporter:kevin tells me he was about 15 cars behind the one that caught fire.ditching his newly- purchased nissan after smoke.lots of it.filled the tunnel

>>i was putting my shirt over my face and i didn't have a scarf, other people had a scarf >> reporter:kevin estimates he literally walked toward the light.about a mile.out of the tunnel.and away from the smoke >>differen't walking through it then driving through it he tells me he's uninjured, his car, not damaged.although it no longer has that new-car >> reporter: smell. kevin is just thankful he escaped unharmed.but he is re- thinking his morning routine. >>had i not stopped for coffee this morning i would have been home free >> reporter:at the caldecott tunnel, mike pelton, kron 4 news >> catherine: and another look -- this was traffic earlier on the 24 -- leading to the caldecott tunnel. as for how it's doing now. here's a look at the traffic map for that area. things are definitely better --- and it's since completely re-opened..

>> catherine: the tunnel fire today.brings back memories of another -- horrific incident in the caldecott. this one was deadly. we'll take a look back at that accident -- tonight on kron4 news at six. >> catherine: now to a developings story out of southern california. a deadly shooting inside the los angeles airport. and three others have been hurt. the suspected gunman is in custody. >> catherine: tonight -- we have new video from inside. but first. stephanie elam is live in l-a tonight.with the latest. stephanie? >> reporter: catherine it began with passengers running for their lives seeking any kind of rough rich. seeking any kind of refuge. >> reporter: the loss angeles airport police

chief is a man with an assault rifle checked and at out of a back and began to open fire in the terminal, terminal 3. >> reporter: sources say another team as agent was shot in the late m1 shot and killed. multiple fired shot quickly. seven people were injured. >> one guy fell down after being shot >> reporter: the suspect went through the checkpoint point where a police fired and hitting the subject. >> people were getting knocked down there was luggage and mayhem everywhere >> reporter: people were hiding impact on stalls and others being evacuated. police were dropped police

with guns drawn >> i heard a couple of popping noises. this sound like someone was keeping me on something that there was a stampede of people coming my way. i realize something was very wrong. >> reporter: at this point, here and the airport is we opening patrick the crowd stopped in place since this happened. only a lolling planes from further destinations to land. however, all of those flights are coming in and out of the terminals. they still asking if you are thinking about coming to l.a. or l 8 fax or anything in this area you may want to rework your plans and go a different route. no cars

today tastes so good. >> catherine: this morning.drivers saw the unusual sight of a big-rig was hanging over a guard- rail off 101 in san francisco. it happened after a crash involving two other cars. >> catherine: this is video from our helicopter partnership with abc7. the crash happened a little before eight am.on northbound 101 - near the third street off-ramp, all lanes have since reopened. >> catherine: a 20 year old gilroy man has been arrested on suspicion of dui after hitting two construction workers in milpitas this morning, killing one and injuring the other. >> catherine: it happened alongside 680 - south of the scott creek road off-ramp. the man was on a motorcycle - and hit a worker who was standing on the right side

of the highway. he then hit the back of a pick-up truck - and hit the second worker. >> catherine: a hayward woman who was shot on halloween night is in critical condition. it happened just after 11pm -- at the lord tennyson apartments in hayward. the woman - was shot several times. >> catherine: >> it is just sad with kids are geared to treating and something like this happens. it is just dangerous. >> very concerned we have children here and we want them to be safe and come home every day. . >> catherine: it's not clear yet if the woman will survive. >> catherine: millions of americans and as many as one in nine california families receive some form of foodstamps or food assistance benefits. but as of today, most are seeing cuts in those benefits because the foodstamp boost

included in the 2009 stimulus package has expired. >> catherine: from san jose, kron four's rob fladeboe has the story of how these cuts are affecting one needy family. >> catherine: single mother sofia gallego can't afford a car so she rides her bike to the store. in her pocket is a foodstamp voucher. she is one of a 4 million californians, a quarter million here in the bay area, whose foodstamp benefits are being cut back. >> i wish they would stop doing this. because everyone is kitty hurt. we continue like this it will just get worse, and worse. everyone getting hurt.. >> reporter:gallego, who is

out of work and has two sons, one of whom is disabled, showed this letter she got from uncle sam informing her that her benefits are being reduced from $249 to $192 dollars a month. gallego found some bargains at the dollar store but she can't use foodstamps for toothpaste, toilet paper, laundry soap and other necessities. she estimates the cuts will mean fewer, smaller meals from now on. groceries unloaded, gallego got back on her bike and headed out in search of recyclables to try and make up the difference. in san >> i am really trying to stretch it. when i saw how much they were decreasing i said no! why? >> reporter: jose rob fladeboe kron 4 news. >> reporter: satellite picture you will see here the weather system is headed towards northern
